Sumitomo Corporation, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” LINE), and NYK Bulkship (Asia) have agreed to study the development of an ammonia bunkering vessel for use in Singapore.

The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to carry out a Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) study and examine how the vessel could be owned and operated.

The work will focus on the ship’s design, technical setup, and safety requirements, as well as how it could fit into Singapore’s developing ammonia bunker market.

The project supports efforts by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to build an ammonia supply chain for both shipping and power generation.

The partners’ study is linked to a wider project on Jurong Island, led by Keppel Ltd, to develop low- or zero-carbon ammonia solutions.

Sumitomo, which is part of that consortium, will lead the FEED work to help move the bunkering concept closer to implementation.

Singapore is positioning itself as a future hub for alternative marine fuels, with ammonia seen as one of the key options for cutting shipping emissions.
