South Korea’s Busan Port Authority (BPA) is stepping up efforts to expand alternative marine fuel infrastructure at Busan New Port, with plans to develop LNG and green methanol bunkering facilities by 2032.
The authority said it recently met with industry participants and government officials to discuss the proposed project and gather opinions on the planned development.
The initiative is aimed at strengthening Busan’s position as a regional bunkering hub as shipping companies prepare for tighter IMO emissions regulations and increasing demand for lower-carbon fuels.
BPA plans to develop the facilities on roughly 120,000 m2 of land located in the southern container hinterland area of Busan New Port.
The proposed infrastructure includes LNG storage capacity of 370,000 m3 and green methanol storage capacity of 150,000 m3, in addition to berths for bunker vessels.
According to BPA, the project is expected to improve long-term fuel supply stability for LNG and methanol bunkering operations at the port.
