Norway-based offshore vessel owner Eidesvik Offshore ASA said its LNG-fuelled platform supply vessel Viking Energy has entered dry dock at Halsnøy Dokk A/S to begin conversion work for a dual-fuel ammonia engine.
The retrofit project is being carried out in cooperation with Norway-based energy company Equinor and will use an ammonia engine supplied by Finland-based technology group Wärtsilä Marine.
Eidesvik said the vessel is expected to become one of the first offshore vessels capable of operating on ammonia fuel in normal operations once the conversion is completed.
The company added that the project is intended to demonstrate ammonia’s potential as a scalable fuel option for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in maritime transport.
