Ship-to-ship bunkering has officially begun at the new Vizhinjam Port located in Southern India.
Adani Bunkering carried out the first operations, which saw MT Shaun 1 supplying VLSFO to the MSC Akritet 2 at the port’s anchorage, according to Minister VN Vasavan.
The Vizhinjam International Seaport, developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), is India’s first deep-water, transshipment container terminal with a natural draft of over 20 metres.
Located near Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, the port is strategically positioned along key east–west shipping routes and is expected to handle some of the world’s largest container vessels.
The launch of bunkering operations marks another milestone for the newly opened port, which began trial operations earlier this year.
“This marks a significant step forward in making Vizhinjam self-reliant, reducing its dependence on foreign ports for marine fuel,” Vasavan said.
