Spanish ferry operator Baleària will implement Europe’s first autonomous e-methanol containerized power system on its electric ferry, Cap de Barbaria, utilizing hydrogen derived from methanol to generate auxiliary power.
The “eNomad” system, built by Catalan company Methanol Reformer, will produce hydrogen from e-methanol onboard.
The hydrogen will power a fuel cell to generate electricity, helping recharge batteries and reducing the need for conventional-powered generators.
The ferry operates between Ibiza and Formentera and has been designed to support hydrogen-based systems since entering service in 2023.
Baleària said the trial will help it assess methanol as a future marine energy source and test the technology under real operating conditions.
