Container shipping company CMA CGM has signed a final shipbuilding contract with Cochin Shipyard Limited for six LNG-powered 1,700 TEU containerships to be built in India.

The agreement was concluded during a visit to India by Chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saadé, in the presence of Shri Shantanu Thakur, Minister of State at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.

The vessels will be fuelled by liquefied natural gas as part of the group’s strategy to deploy lower-carbon propulsion technologies across its fleet.

Through its shipmanagement arm CMA SHIPS, around 1,000 Indian seafarers are currently sailing with the group, with a target to increase that number to 1,500 by the end of 2026.

CMA CGM also announced the launch of a dedicated R&D hub in India focused on developing next-generation AI solutions for global maritime and logistics operations.
