Italy’s Enilive has begun supplying hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO)-derived biofuels directly to ships by barge in the ports of Genoa and Ravenna.
The company said it has already signed supply agreements with major shipping operators and plans to start similar deliveries in Venice by the end of 2025.
The HVO is produced at Enilive’s biorefineries in Venice and Gela from waste-based feedstocks such as used cooking oil, animal fats, and agri-food residues. It can be used in its pure form on vessels certified for the fuel and offers a 60–90% reduction in GHG emissions compared with conventional marine fuels.
Enilive said the move will help shipowners meet FuelEU Maritime requirements and cut compliance costs under the EU Emissions Trading System.
With a current biorefining capacity of 1.65 million tonnes per year, Enilive is among Europe’s top HVO producers and plans to raise capacity to over 5 million tonnes by 2030.
