A dual-fuel container ship operated by Denmark-based shipping giant A.P. Moller – Maersk has completed its second bunkering operation using 100% ethanol fuel.

The company’s feeder container vessel Laura Mærsk recently took on ethanol in Rotterdam as part of Maersk’s ongoing efforts to evaluate alternative low-emission fuels, the company said in a LinkedIn post.

According to Maersk, the latest trial differed from an earlier test by involving a larger-scale fuel delivery by barge. The company said this allowed it to assess operational handling, supply chains and bunkering procedures under conditions closer to commercial operations.

Maersk described the trial as another step in its programme to explore future fuel options for its growing dual-fuel fleet.

The company said ethanol is one of several fuel pathways being assessed as it seeks to build flexibility and diversify its low-emission fuel portfolio.
