Japanese shipping firm NYK said it used 251,017 mt of B24 marine biofuel in FY2024, up from just 6,287 mt in FY2023, according to its newly released Progress Report 2025.

The company said the fuel was a blend containing 24% second-generation FAME biofuel derived from non-food feedstocks and certified under the ISCC system.

NYK said the increased use of biofuels delivered an emissions reduction equivalent to around 180,000 tonnes of CO₂.

In addition to liquid biofuels, the company said it has started continuous use of bio-LNG on its LNG-powered car carriers. Since June 2025, NYK has been sourcing bio-LNG from Titan Supply in Zeebrugge, beginning with the vessels Daisy Leader and Sumire Leader.

The bio-LNG is supplied under a mass-balance (book-and-claim) system, with sustainability verified through ISCC-EU certification
