Australia’s Viva Energy and Origin Energy have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a proof of concept for bio-LPG production at Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery in Australia.
The project will assess the use of domestically sourced used cooking oil (UCO) and other renewable feedstocks to manufacture bio-LPG, with Origin planning to market the fuel to its customer base if commercially viable.
The companies said the agreement is aimed at establishing a viable domestic bio-LPG supply chain, including work on pricing frameworks and carbon accounting standards needed to support commercialisation.
Lachlan Pfeiffer, Chief Strategy Officer at Viva Energy, said: “By leveraging our Geelong refinery’s capabilities and collaborating with industry leaders like Origin Energy, we are proud to be exploring opportunities to pioneer the production of bio-LPG from locally sourced renewable feedstocks.”
Amber Fennell, General Manager, LPG at Origin Energy, said: “Origin is excited to collaborate with Viva Energy on this landmark initiative.”
