Swiss engine company WinGD has partnered with South Korea’s Panasia to upgrade LNG-powered ship engines that are already in service.
The agreement, signed in South Korea, focuses on improving WinGD’s dual-fuel engines so they use less fuel and produce fewer harmful emissions.
The upgrades are designed to make older engines perform more like the latest engines.
WinGD said the technology can significantly reduce methane emissions from engines and help shipowners save money by lowering their exposure to carbon taxes and environmental regulations.
The companies are already in discussions with several shipowners to carry out these upgrades.
“Korea has been the biggest market for X-DF engines since they were introduced in 2016,” said René Baart
Head of Retrofit & Upgrade Solutions, WinGD.
“In partnership with WinGD, we are looking forward to revisiting many of those vessels to ensure they can benefit from the advantages of cutting-edge dual-fuel LNG technology,” said Joseph Ohg. Head of Sales Division, Panasia
