The World Shipping Council (WSC) has called on the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to use the additional year gained from delaying adoption of the Net-Zero Framework to bridge remaining gaps and ensure the creation of an effective global carbon pricing system.

Recognising the “challenging and complex negotiations” at the IMO this week, WSC said the pause should be seen as an opportunity to refine the framework and secure global consensus.

“The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy and industry’s investment trajectory remain aligned toward net-zero by 2050,” WSC said, noting that the liner sector has already invested around USD 150 billion in vessels capable of running on green fuels.

WSC stressed that the IMO remains “the right place to deliver a global solution,” adding that the industry is ready to continue working with governments to develop regulatory consistency, boost renewable fuel production, and ensure the maritime energy transition stays on course.
