A container ship transiting near Oman has been struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, triggering a fire in the engine room and forcing the crew to abandon the vessel.

Several of the world’s largest container shipping lines have suspended sailings, cancelled bookings and rerouted services in response to heightened security risks accompanying the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Oman News Agency says two drones were shot down over Dhofar Governorate, while a third crashed near Salalah Port with no reported casualties or damage.

Growing insecurity in the Gulf has prompted shipowners to avoid the region altogether, while insurers have withdrawn war risk cover — a move that could significantly disrupt energy and commodity flows.
