PortXChange has joined the SASHA Coalition, where it will contribute its expertise on the role of ports in the maritime energy transition.
The Rotterdam-based maritime technology company said ports will be central to the adoption of cleaner fuels and technologies.
“Ports are where vessels, fuels, infrastructure, cargo and communities meet,” said Sjoerd de Jager, Managing Director & Co-Founder, PortXChange.
“If the port perspective is missing, we risk building an energy transition that looks convincing on paper but struggles in practice.”
Sabrina Khan-Dighe, Membership & Advocacy Officer at the SASHA Coalition, said collaboration across the shipping sector will be needed to put the industry on track for net zero.
“We will only see shipping on track for net zero when all actors are working together across the sector, and ports’ importance as a key to unlocking cross-sector decarbonisation cannot be overstated.
“Developing cleaner fuels and technologies is critical, but adoption will depend on ports having the right infrastructure and operational readiness to support investment.”
PortXChange’s EmissionInsider platform gives ports visibility over emissions from ships, trucks, rail and terminal activity, helping them identify emissions hotspots, assess reduction measures and plan infrastructure.
“There is a tendency in maritime decarbonisation to jump straight to the future fuel and assume the rest will fall into place,” de Jager said. “It will not. Infrastructure, demand, operational readiness and policy have to move together.
“And while we prepare for tomorrow’s fuels, we cannot ignore today’s emissions. Ports do not have the luxury of waiting for one perfect technology to arrive. They need to understand their emissions now, act on the sources they can influence and make better investment decisions for what comes next. That is the perspective we are bringing to SASHA.”
