Svitzer is expanding its tug fleet with four fuel-efficient newbuildings ordered from Indian shipbuilder Swan Defence and Heavy Industries (SDHI).
The contract, valued at $26-78.8 million, will see the vessels built at SDHI’s Pipavav shipyard in Gujarat, with deliveries starting in early 2028.
The TRAnsverse 3200 design was jointly developed by Svitzer and naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. for harbour towage and escort work.
The tugs will have a bollard pull of 80 tonnes and are expected to consume up to 15% less bunker fuel than conventional designs.
They will also be capable of running on biofuels and will be prepared for IMO Tier III and FiFi1 firefighting requirements.
The order is part of Svitzer’s wider fleet renewal programme. The maritime services company currently operates more than 500 vessels globally.
