The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) will reduce the maximum authorised draft for vessels using the Neopanamax locks in two stages amid concerns over water levels in Gatun Lake.
From August 26, the limit will fall to 48 feet (14.63 metres), before being reduced again to 47.5 feet (14.48 metres) from September 3.
The ACP said the measures are based on current water levels and projected conditions in Gatun Lake over the coming weeks.
The reductions are the fourth and fifth draft adjustments announced by the authority this year, but will not affect the number of daily vessel transits.
The Panama Canal suffered a severe drought in 2023-24, disrupting commercial traffic and prompting some owners and operators to reroute vessels.
The World Meteorological Organization has said a strong El Niño pattern is developing and could strengthen between August and October.
