Germany’s Federal Ministry for Transport (BMV) has opened the first application round under a new funding programme aimed at accelerating the use of cleaner inland waterway vessels.
The ministry said on Monday (10 August) that up to €70 million will initially be available for projects involving zero-emission and low-emission inland vessels.
The funding will also support the charging and refuelling infrastructure needed to operate such vessels, with the programme targeting both vessels and port facilities.
Federal Transport Minister Steffen Bilger said the initiative would help bring zero-emission propulsion technologies into practical use while supporting Germany’s inland shipping sector.
The programme is part of the government’s efforts to strengthen climate-friendly freight transport on German waterways and support investment in modern vessels and port infrastructure.
