Conoship International has introduced a fully electric general cargo vessel designed for zero-emission short-sea operations.

The new design is based on the company’s CIP3800 platform, a proven general cargo design with numerous vessels already built and trading.

The vessel features a 40 MWh modular battery system, providing a range of up to 350 nautical miles at 10 knots or 650 nautical miles at 8 knots.

It retains a 4,737 m³ box-shaped cargo hold and can carry 3,200 tonnes of cargo at a 5.20 m draft.

The battery system is split between forward and aft compartments to improve trim and stability and avoid the need for additional ballast water.

The design is intended for dedicated coastal routes, fixed shuttle services and environmentally sensitive waters where charging infrastructure is available. Conoship said it could be suited to Scandinavian fjord corridors and zero-emission areas.

The vessel measures 89.43 m in length, with a 13.20 m breadth and 5.20 m draft. It has zero direct CO₂, NOx, SOx and particulate matter emissions.

The battery architecture can accommodate different cell chemistries, including NMC and LFP, depending on route requirements and charging arrangements.

Conoship also said a downsized generator could be added as a range extender or emergency take-home system, potentially using sustainable drop-in biofuels.
