Iran and Oman are working on plans for a temporary joint maritime corridor through the Strait of Hormuz as the two countries seek to improve the safety and coordination of vessel movements.
The proposal was discussed during Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi’s visit to Iran, where he met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, according to a joint statement issued by Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
The planned framework would establish arrangements for safer navigation and maritime traffic management, while also providing for the exchange of information between the two sides.
It would also cover related maritime and security services, although the statement did not provide details on when the corridor could become operational or how it would be administered.
Iran and Oman also said they would engage with other Persian Gulf states on the initiative and emphasised the need to respect international law and the sovereign rights of countries bordering the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping chokepoints, linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
