P&O Ferries has made the Pride of Hull its first vessel on the Hull–Rotterdam route to run exclusively on B30 biofuel, replacing ULSFO
According to the company, the permanent switch is expected to deliver a lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions reduction of about 20% compared with conventional marine fuels.
The move reflects growing interest in biofuel blends as a practical decarbonisation step, as they can be used in existing engines without costly retrofits or downtime.
“B30 is a drop-in fuel, which makes it the right solution for us,” said Lauri-Ann Houlker, Fleet Sustainability Compliance Reporting Manager at P&O Ferries.
“If we went down the lines of methanol or ammonia, we would need to invest heavily and take the vessel off service.”
