ITOCHU has supplied green methanol to Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) and carried out ship-to-ship bunkering for the methanol dual-fuel bulk carrier Green Future at the Port of Ulsan, South Korea, on September 28.

The vessel is regularly chartered by NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers Ltd.

The fuel, produced from biomass-derived feedstocks, is expected to generate lower greenhouse gas emissions than conventional marine fuels across its life cycle.

Methanol’s liquid form at ambient conditions allows the use of existing storage and handling infrastructure, supporting its adoption alongside dual-fuel ships.

ITOCHU said it will use the Ulsan supply to advance the development of low-carbon fuel supply chains and contribute to the industry’s energy transition in line with the IMO’s 2050 net-zero target and Japan’s own decarbonisation goals.
