After no activity in August, a total of 14 new alternative-fuelled vessels were ordered in September, according to DNV.

Of the orders, 12 were for LNG-fuelled ships — six container vessels, four bulk carriers and two cruise ships — while the remaining two were LPG-fuelled. Two LNG bunkering vessels were also booked during the month, DNV’s Kristian Hammer said in a LinkedIn update on Wednesday.

Despite the monthly rebound, overall ordering activity slowed in Q3, with 41 ships contracted compared to 69 in Q1 and 82 in Q2.

In the first nine months of 2025, owners placed 192 alternative-fuel newbuild orders, down 48% from the same period last year.

LNG accounted for 121 of these, followed by 43 methanol-fuelled vessels.

Containers remain the most active segment, making up 64% of the year-to-date total with 120 ships
