The container ship MSC Gabon has become the first vessel to receive a bio-LNG bunkering at the Port of Malaga, in a milestone operation for southern Spain’s maritime energy transition.

Energy firm Axpo supplied 3,000 cbm of bio-LNG to the vessel in a ship-to-ship transfer carried out by the bunker vessel Avenir Aspiration, the port authority said.

Axpo holds authorisation to deliver LNG bunkering services in Malaga.

“The successful operation confirms Malaga as a strategic hub for the supply of alternative fuels in the Mediterranean, opening up new opportunities for the development of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly services,” the port said.

The operation marks a first for the port and highlights the increasing adoption of bio-LNG — seen as a bridge fuel in shipping’s push to cut emissions.
