Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has become the first shipping company to join the ammonia bunkering initiative in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, supporting plans to establish a low-carbon fuel network for large vessels by 2030.
Under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with NH3 and Oceania, MOL will collaborate on the development of bunkering infrastructure to serve Capesize bulk carriers calling at major iron ore export hubs, including Dampier and Port Hedland.
The Pilbara Ports Authority is already working with NH3, which will produce and supply blue ammonia, and Oceania, which will operate the bunkering business.
MOL’s participation strengthens the project’s commercial and operational base as it moves toward the design and permitting phase.
In parallel, MOL is advancing its own ammonia-fuel strategy.
The company is set to co-own three ammonia-powered bulk carriers with Belgium’s CMB.TECH, with deliveries expected between 2026 and 2027.
MOL plans to deploy the vessels on the West Australia–East Asia route, reinforcing its commitment to decarbonised shipping.
