The MultiPLHY consortium has successfully started up the world’s largest multi-megawatt high-temperature electrolyser (HTE) at Neste’s renewable products refinery in Rotterdam, marking a key milestone in renewable hydrogen production.

The 2.6 MW solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) system by Sunfire produces more than 60 kg of renewable hydrogen per hour using high-temperature steam.

By utilising heat, it requires significantly less electricity than conventional systems.

“The MultiPLHY project has given Neste valuable insights and experience in integrating industrial-scale renewable hydrogen production into our refinery.

“This demonstration project also shows the importance of cooperation across the whole value chain,” said Jukka Kanerva, Senior Vice President, Renewable Refining at Neste.

“Thanks to their unrivaled efficiency, our high-temperature SOEC electrolyzers will be the preferred solution in many applications where waste heat is available,” said Nils Aldag, CEO of Sunfire.
