The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to buy 1 million barrels of domestically produced crude oil to begin refilling the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR).
Deliveries will be made to the Bryan Mound site between December 2025 and January 2026.
The purchase, funded through USD 171 million appropriated under the Working Families Tax Cut signed by President Donald Trump earlier this year, marks the start of efforts to restore the SPR after a 180-million-barrel drawdown in 2022.
The reserve currently holds just over 400 million barrels of its 700 million barrel capacity.
“All notices of acquisition limit purchases to U.S. companies or U.S. subsidiaries of international companies with crude oil sourced from domestic production,” DOE said.
