The US and China have agreed to defer newly introduced port fees for one year, following talks between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping on Thursday.
The decision pauses reciprocal port charges imposed earlier this month, which were the first to link fees to a vessel’s ownership, flag, and place of build. The measures had caused concern among shipowners and operators over potential disruptions to trade.
The one-year suspension offers both sides time to continue discussions while reducing uncertainty for the global maritime sector.
