Oman’s Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a consortium of Spanish and international companies to develop a green methanol production and bunkering project in Dhofar Governorate.
The agreement was signed in Madrid during the state visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to Spain, underscoring both nations’ commitment to expanding cooperation in renewable energy and sustainable maritime fuels.
The consortium includes HIF EMEA, ACCIONA & Nordex Green Hydrogen, and Al MEERA Investment. Together, the partners will carry out feasibility studies and technical assessments to establish a major green methanol facility in Dhofar, leveraging the region’s abundant solar and wind resources.
The project aims to produce green hydrogen from renewable power and combine it with captured industrial or biogenic carbon dioxide to create green methanol. The resulting fuel will be used for ship bunkering and export, strengthening Oman’s role in the global transition to low-carbon marine energy.
Oman’s transport ministry will support the initiative by coordinating with government entities, allocating land, and providing regulatory and investment incentives.
The project aligns with Oman’s strategy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and reinforces its ambition to develop Dhofar as a leading hub for green fuels and maritime logistics in the Middle East.
