Korean Register (KR) has granted Approval in Principle (AIP) for HD Hyundai’s new ammonia safety system ‘Hi-CLEARS’.
The system was developed with HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and was announced on 11 September at Gastech 2025 in Milan.
Hi-CLEARS captures any leaked ammonia, converts it into liquid, and then uses that liquid in an SCR unit to treat emissions. This prevents ammonia from being released into the air or sea.
KR also helped revise IACS Unified Requirement M77 to allow ammonia and aqueous ammonia to be used in SCR systems, providing the regulatory basis for the technology.
YOO Byungyong of HD KSOE said:
“Hi-CLEARS safely processes ammonia leaks and treats the resulting liquid through SCR, thereby meeting both safety and environmental regulations. Through close cooperation with KR, we have enhanced its commercial viability while also strengthening our global competitiveness.”
RYU Hongryeul of HD HHI added:
“This joint development marks an important achievement in addressing two key challenges of ammonia-fueled vessels reducing ammonia discharge and utilizing it for harmful gas treatment.”
