The United States has come out against the International Maritime Organisation’s proposed Net-Zero Framework, warning it would unfairly burden American consumers and benefit China.
In a joint statement on Tuesday, the US government said the draft plan — which includes a global fuel standard and economic measure due for adoption in October — would drive up nationwide energy and shipping costs.
“President Trump has made it clear that the United States will not accept any international environmental agreement that unduly or unfairly burdens the United States or harms the interests of the American people,” the statement said.
Washington criticised the proposal for mandating costly fuels not yet widely available, while excluding lower-emission options such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and biofuels, where US firms hold a competitive edge.
“The Trump Administration unequivocally rejects this proposal before the IMO and will not tolerate any action that increases costs for our citizens, energy providers, shipping companies and their customers, or tourists,” the statement added.
