Iverson Terminates Green Ammonia Project in Sauda After Grid Capacity Withdrawal

Iverson eFuels has decided to terminate its planned green ammonia production project in Sauda, Norway, citing uncertainty over future grid capacity.

The company had been developing plans for several years to establish an ammonia plant at Birkeland in Sauda, and the zoning plan for the project was recently adopted by the municipal council after what it described as a thorough process.

However, Norwegian grid operator Statnett withdrew the previously allocated 270 MW of grid capacity after the project was delayed by more than two years compared with its original timeline.

Statnett said new capacity may only become available once an upgraded grid is completed, expected between 2033 and 2035. The company also noted that there is no guarantee on when the upgraded grid will be ready.

Iverson said the uncertainty surrounding the timing of future grid availability made further development of the project unfeasible.

“We naturally find this highly regrettable. Iverson, Sauda municipality and a number of partners have invested significant resources in developing the project, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has contributed to the process,” the company said.

Iverson added that it is now exploring the possibility of establishing a data centre in Sauda so that work and resources invested in the project can still be used to create new activity in the area. The company said it will invite the municipality and other partners to discuss the potential development.
