Classification society Korean Register (KR) has released new guidelines for ships using hybrid electric power systems, outlining testing requirements and technical standards.
KR, a South Korea-based classification society, said the move reflects growing adoption of hybrid setups as environmental rules tighten and battery and fuel cell technologies advance.
The guidelines cover vessels designed, built or retrofitted with hybrid systems combining multiple power sources, including generators, batteries and fuel cells.
KR said such systems can improve operational efficiency and economic performance, while also enhancing safety and reliability.
It added that hybrid power can help reduce fuel consumption and lower the environmental footprint of ships, supporting compliance with stricter emissions regulations.
