LOTTE Fine Chemical said it has carried out the world’s first commercial ammonia bunkering, delivering green ammonia as marine fuel at the Port of Ulsan.
The fuel was supplied on Thursday to an ammonia-powered vessel built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries.
The ammonia was produced using renewable energy in Inner Mongolia by Envision Energy and imported by LOTTE Fine Chemical, in what it said was the first cross-border trade of green ammonia.
The development demonstrates a full supply chain from renewable power to ammonia production, transport and use as marine fuel.
CEO Seungwon Chung said the milestone shows a carbon-free energy chain is now viable, though ammonia’s toxicity remains a key safety concern for wider adoption.
