Finland-based technology group Wärtsilä has signed a long-term overhaul and service agreement with Swedish shipowner Erik Thun Group, aimed at supporting the performance and longevity of key onboard systems across its fleet.
The agreement, developed in collaboration with MF Shipping Group, covers a broad scope of lifecycle services, including overhauls, technical and field services, workshop support, and spare parts supply. It was booked by Wärtsilä in the first quarter of 2026.
Under the deal, Wärtsilä will provide OEM-level support for 4-stroke medium-speed engines, propulsion systems, and shaft line equipment, with a focus on minimising downtime through planned and condition-based maintenance. Workshop services will support component reconditioning and restoration, while a reliable spare parts pipeline is intended to ensure operational continuity.
The move reflects a broader industry trend towards long-term service agreements over transactional maintenance, as shipowners seek greater reliability, cost predictability, and regulatory compliance amid tightening environmental requirements and increased digitalisation.
Henrik Källsson, Deputy Managing Director at Erik Thun Group, said the partnership supports the company’s focus on operational reliability and fleet renewal, adding that Wärtsilä’s technical expertise is key as the group introduces more sustainable vessel designs.
Wärtsilä said the agreement will help optimise fuel efficiency, streamline overhaul planning, and enhance vessel availability, particularly important for short sea shipping operations where turnaround times are tight.
Stefan Wiik, Vice President, Parts & Field Service at Wärtsilä Marine, noted that integrated lifecycle support is becoming central to decarbonisation strategies, enabling shipowners to maintain compliance while improving performance over time.
Erik Thun Group operates a fleet of around 50 vessels, including dry cargo ships, product tankers, and cement carriers, primarily across Northern European short sea routes. The company has a longstanding relationship with Wärtsilä, having installed its engines and propulsion solutions across multiple vessel classes.
