ABB has signed an agreement with Swedish nuclear energy firm Blykalla to develop advanced small modular reactor (SMR) technology, with potential applications in both land-based power and shipping.

The collaboration will begin with a pilot SMR facility near Oskarshamn, about 340 km south of Stockholm, as proof of concept ahead of wider deployment.

Blykalla’s SEALER-E prototype is a lead-cooled reactor design identified as a promising candidate for large commercial vessels under the Nuclear Propulsion for Merchant Ships I (NuProShip I) project.

ABB will contribute its expertise in power distribution, control, automation and system integration to support deployment at sea, alongside electrification, digitalisation and cyber security solutions to meet nuclear safety standards.

“We see strong momentum in Sweden for nuclear power in general, and SMRs in particular, said Jacob Stedman, CEO of Blykalla.

“This is why we look forward to bringing our technology to market as part of efforts to enable the transition to a net-zero future.”
