Singapore-based tanker owner and operator AET has signed an agreement for its first hybrid electric dynamic positioning shuttle tanker (DPST), marking a further step in the company’s push to expand its lower-emissions fleet.

The newbuilding will be constructed by Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corp. and will be a 154,000 deadweight tonne Suezmax DPST equipped with an electric energy storage system and designed to be dual-fuel ethanol-ready.

Delivery is projected for 2028, with the vessel secured on long-term charter.

AET said the agreement supports its ambitions to remain a leader in the shuttle tanker segment while advancing maritime energy transition goals. The addition of hybrid electric propulsion is intended to broaden lower-emissions options for customers and enhance the competitiveness of its DPST fleet.

The company currently operates one of the world’s largest DP shuttle tanker fleets, with 17 vessels deployed across Brazil and Norway and further growth is planned. Dual-fuel capability is already being rolled out across its tanker segments, and the new vessel adds hybrid-electric functionality alongside future ethanol dual-fuel optionality.

Nick Potter, President and CEO of AET, said: “AET owns and operates one of the youngest and largest DPST fleets serving Brazil, and the North and Barents seas. Our collective experience in dual-fuel vessels and growth in the DPST segment has been driven by deep partnerships. Our ambition is to continue extending our industry leading position and deliver reliable, safe and sustainable DPST solutions to customers worldwide.”

AET said the vessel has been designed for improved energy efficiency and to support future ethanol use as a marine fuel, forming part of its broader multi-fuel fleet growth programme and strategy to shift towards lower-emissions technologies.
