Australia’s Port of Melbourne and Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) have signed an MoU to advance decarbonisation, innovation, and social sustainability in port operations.

The MoU was signed during the Australia at ASEAN Business Mission Reception held alongside the ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Kuala Lumpur, and was exchanged between Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

As Prime Minister Albanese noted at the ceremony, “It’s good that we’ve had all of those MoUs witnessed here today that will lead to further development.”

The agreement focuses on three key pillars: reducing maritime emissions and improving operational efficiency; exploring alternative fuel solutions and related infrastructure; and promoting social inclusiveness through training and equitable employment practices.

Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon said, “This MoU reflects our commitment to being a future-focused port. We are proud to work alongside PTP to drive meaningful change in the maritime sector and support the decarbonisation of the global supply chain.”

PTP CEO Mark Hardiman added, “As we mark 25 years of PTP’s growth and evolution, this MoU with Port of Melbourne underscores our belief that meaningful progress in sustainability must be grounded in partnership.”

The partnership, initiated in 2023 under Australia’s Partnerships for Infrastructure (P4I) programme, builds on both ports’ commitments to the Paris Agreement and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
