Berg Propulsion has secured a second retrofit project with Norwegian shipowner Arriva after confirming fuel savings of more than 10% on the cargo vessel Norjarl.

Arriva installed Berg’s MPC800 control system and Dynamic Drive on Norjarl earlier this year to cut fuel use and improve efficiency at lower operating speeds. After several months of monitoring in the North Sea and Baltic Sea, Arriva reported fuel savings above expectations.

“The Norjarl project showed the impact introducing state-of-the-art control technology could have when an existing ship is designed and maintained to the highest standards,” said Paul Helland, Technical Manager at Arriva Shipping. “After verifying the gains, we move forward with Norbris.”

The next retrofit will see Berg upgrade the 4,183 gt Norbris, replacing its existing control system with the same MPC800 and Dynamic Drive package used on Norjarl.

Magnus Thorén, Energy & Efficiency Sales Manager at Berg Propulsion, said the combination of new controls and generator integration offers a simple, cost-effective way to boost performance and flexibility.

“Arriva has become a key partner for us in Norway, and seeing the first retrofit deliver proven results makes this second project especially rewarding,” Thorén said.

Saga Marine, Berg’s representative in Norway, will again support the installation.
