Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has introduced new methanol training courses to improve crew safety and readiness as methanol-fuelled ships enter service.

The programme includes three modules — a familiarisation course, an advanced simulator-based training, and a methanol firefighting course — covering both theoretical and practical aspects of handling the fuel.

BSM said the initiative responds to the absence of formal STCW training standards for methanol, with content developed in line with draft IMO guidelines.

Methanol differs from conventional fuels in its handling and safety needs, burning with an invisible flame and requiring special detection and firefighting techniques.

The company said the courses are part of its broader effort to enhance operational safety and support the industry’s shift toward new fuel technologies.
