BIMCO has pushed back publication of its new Biofuel Clause for Time Charter Parties from the end of 2025 to early spring 2026.
The shipping association cites the need for further work on safety, technical requirements and industry feedback.
The clause is being developed to clarify responsibilities between owners and charterers when using biofuels, including specifications, supply procedures and risk management.
Key areas under review include how “biofuel” will be defined, recognised standards for blends, and flexibility for alternative arrangements subject to testing and approval. BIMCO is also considering fuel quality issues such as stability, engine compatibility and procedures for handling non-compliant fuel.
Other topics include tank cleaning, crew competence, segregation of different grades, and rules around comingling and additives. Commercial impacts, including adjustments to speed and consumption warranties due to the lower energy content of biofuels, are also being addressed.
The clause is intended to reduce disputes and provide a clear framework for biofuel use as shipping moves towards decarbonisation.
