CF Industries Holdings has delivered its first certified low-carbon ammonia cargo to Europe from its Donaldsonville, Louisiana, complex in the US.

The 23,500 mt shipment, purchased by Trafigura, is bound for Antwerp for use by engineering materials firm Envalior in the production of low-carbon caprolactam.

The cargo is certified under the Verified Ammonia Carbon Intensity (VACI) Program as having a significantly lower well-to-gate carbon footprint than conventional natural gas-based ammonia.

“We are proud to partner with industry leaders Trafigura and Envalior as we work together to develop a low-carbon ammonia supply chain in advance of the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism,” said Bert Frost, executive vice president at CF Industries.

Trafigura’s global ammonia head Patricio Norris called it the firm’s first low-carbon ammonia cargo to Europe, while Envalior VP Thorsten Bredemann said it was a key step in decarbonising the company’s supply chain and downstream production of PA6.

The milestone follows the start-up of CF’s carbon capture and storage project at Donaldsonville in July 2025.

The facility can store up to 2 million mt of CO2 annually, enabling the production of about 1.9 million mt per year of VACI-certified low-carbon ammonia, which can also be upgraded into low-carbon nitrogen fertilisers.

This marks CF’s second low-carbon ammonia delivery after an earlier sale to a customer in Africa.
