CMB.TECH has secured a green ammonia offtake agreement in China, signing a deal with CEEC Hydrogen Energy for supply from the Songyuan project in Jilin Province.

Under the first phase of the project, around 158,000 mt/year of renewable ammonia is expected to be produced.

The facility was completed in September 2025 and is scheduled to enter commercial operation in January 2026.

CMB.TECH said the project is powered largely by off-grid renewable energy, supported by battery systems and hydrogen buffer storage, and has obtained ISCC EU RFNBO certification following an audit by Bureau Veritas.

The offtake agreement is designed to underpin fuel availability for CMB.TECH’s ammonia-fuelled vessels, with the company due to receive 11 ammonia-powered ships during 2026. These include ten Newcastlemax bulk carriers being built at Qingdao Beihai Shipyard and a 1,400 TEU container vessel under construction at China Merchants Industry Weihai.

To further strengthen supply-chain access, CMB.TECH will also take a minority stake in Jiangsu Andefu Energy Technology, one of China’s largest ammonia supply-chain operators. Andefu is developing storage and bunkering infrastructure, including a 49,000 cbm low-temperature ammonia storage tank in Nanjing scheduled for commissioning in the first quarter of 2026, as well as ship-to-ship ammonia bunkering services targeted for commercial rollout in 2026.

“Today marks a big milestone in our decarbonisation journey,” CEO Alexander Saverys said. “With an investment in the Chinese ammonia supply chain, CMB.TECH will be able to provide green ammonia to its ships.”
