The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said it received a report of an incident 2 nautical miles north of Oman involving a container vessel transiting eastbound through the Strait of Hormuz.
According to the advisory issued on Wednesday, the vessel was hit by an unknown projectile just above the waterline, causing a fire in the engine room.
UKMTO said the crew have abandoned the vessel, but all personnel are accounted for and no injuries have been reported.
“No environmental impact has been reported at this time,” the notice said.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and vessels operating in the area have been advised to transit with caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.
The alert comes amid heightened security concerns across the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints for global oil and container shipping traffic.
