Shipowners ordered 30 alternative-fuelled vessels in October, led by LNG-powered container ships, according to DNV data.
LNG accounted for 26 of the newbuilds, all in the container segment, while four methanol-fuelled tankers were also added, said Kristian Hammer, product manager AFI and senior consultant at DNV.
So far this year, 222 alternative-fuel-capable vessels have been ordered, down 52% from the same period in 2024. LNG remains the dominant choice, representing about two-thirds of orders (147 ships), with most coming from the container sector.
The LNG bunkering fleet also continues to grow, with four additional vessels ordered in October, bringing the global total to 38. Two methanol bunkering vessels were also ordered during the month.
