Spain-based gas infrastructure firm Enagás has launched a new LNG bunkering vessel, Alisios LNG, at the port of Huelva in southwestern Spain.

The vessel was launched on March 12 by Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo and Ignacio Soneira, Managing Director of Axpo Iberia, the Spanish unit of Swiss energy company Axpo.

Owned by Enagás through its subsidiary Scale Green Energy, the vessel has been chartered by Axpo for commercial operations and will supply LNG and bio-LNG to ships operating along the southern coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

The vessel has a storage capacity of 12,500 cbm, allowing it to supply low-emission marine fuels to vessels across the region. Enagás said the ship incorporates advanced technology designed to minimise operational emissions.

“Today’s launch is a key milestone in the development of infrastructure that contributes to the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. The adoption of more sustainable fuels, such as LNG and bio-LNG, also supports compliance with European emission reduction targets,” Gonzalo said.

Soneira added: “Commissioning this new vessel further consolidates Axpo’s leadership in the small-scale LNG bunkering business as we continue our efforts to help the transition to decarbonise maritime transport.”

Enagás now operates four LNG bunkering vessels through Scale Green Energy: Alisios LNG, Levante LNG, Mistral LNG and Haugesund Knutsen.

The companies said the new vessel will help meet rising demand for LNG and bio-LNG in the maritime sector as European regulations push for lower shipping emissions.
