Italian energy firm Eni has secured approval from Italy’s Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security to convert part of its Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi refinery in Italy’s Pavia into a biorefinery and has filed for Environmental Impact Assessment.
The project will convert the Hydrocracker (HDC2) unit with Ecofining technology and add a pre-treatment unit for waste and residues, enabling production of HVO diesel and SAF biojet.
Operations are due to start in 2028 with capacity to process 550,000 tonnes of feedstock per year, mainly waste and residues.
The new plant will supply SAF and jet fuel to north-west Italian airports, including via a pipeline to Milan Malpensa.
The conversion is part of Enilive’s plan to expand biorefining capacity from 1.65 million tonnes per year today to over 5 million by 2030, with the potential to produce up to 2 million tonnes of SAF annually.
