Marine engine maker Everllence has completed the world’s first conversion of a B&W S90 two-stroke engine to dual-fuel methanol operation on COSCO Shipping Lines‘ container ship, COSCO Shipping Libra.
The 20,000 TEU ship’s diesel engine was upgraded to a methanol-capable engine following successful sea trials.
The project was carried out by Everllence PrimeServ and COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, covering all stages from design to commissioning.
A 4S90 testbed engine in Japan helped validate the methanol technology before installation.
Everllence said the milestone proves large-bore conversions are technically and commercially viable, with over 300 ships using S90 engines that could be retrofitted for methanol operation.
