Belgium-based shipowner Exmar has completed its largest ship-to-ship (STS) ammonia transfer to date, marking a new operational milestone for the company.
The operation involved the 38,500 cbm midsize gas carrier Kortrijk, which discharged a full cargo of ammonia during an STS transfer carried out with Trammo at the Port of Sohar, Oman.
Exmar said the transfer was completed safely and in line with stringent operational and safety procedures.
The company highlighted that the operation reflects the experience of its crews and its long track record in ammonia transportation, a cargo Exmar has handled for more than four decades. That experience is expected to become increasingly relevant as ammonia gains attention as a potential low-carbon marine fuel.
Exmar is also preparing its fleet with four new 46,000 cbm midsize gas carriers, which will be equipped with ammonia dual-fuel engines. The company said the newbuildings are intended to support the safe transport of ammonia while aligning with the industry’s broader decarbonisation goals.
