South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has received classification approval for a new HiMSEN engine that can run on ammonia, marking another step in its move toward cleaner ship propulsion.
The new H32CDF-LA model can deliver up to 5.4 MW of power—more than double that of the company’s earlier ammonia engine.
It’s based on an upgraded version of HD Hyundai’s existing diesel engine platform.
The company said the new model offers better efficiency and lower emissions, while meeting strict safety standards set by global classification societies.
Tests were carried out at HD Hyundai’s Engine Technology Centre in Korea from 29 September to 2 October, with officials from seven major class societies, including DNV, ABS, and Lloyd’s Register, attending.
HD Hyundai said the approval helps expand its range of engines designed for alternative fuels such as ammonia and methanol, supporting the shipping industry’s decarbonisation goals.
