Consumer firm Henkel has expanded its partnership with DHL Global Forwarding by adopting the logistics firm’s book & claim system for sustainable marine biofuels, a step expected to cut about 4,700 metric tons of CO₂e from its ocean transport in 2025.
The agreement will cover roughly 9,000 TEUs of Henkel’s freight, with emission reductions independently verified.
Under the arrangement, DHL purchases waste-based biofuels and integrates it into its broader shipping network.
Instead of linking the fuel use to a specific vessel or trade lane, the resulting emissions savings are assigned to Henkel through the book & claim approach. This enables the company to reduce its reported logistics emissions even when its cargo is transported on ships that have not physically burned the biofuel.
“This expansion of our partnership is another milestone in our joint decarbonization journey,” said Amanda Rasmussen, Chief Commercial Officer at DHL Global Forwarding.
